Avoid putting fat in kitchen plughole

How to keep your drains clear

No one wants the unpleasant smell, cost or a hassle of a blocked drain at their home.  But what can you do to make sure that all is well in the drains around your property?  Here are seven top tips to make sure that your drains stay clear.

Do not pour fat down the kitchen sink

When you are making your Ulster Fry, always make sure that the cooled excess fat from your cooking ends up in your kitchen compost bin rather than being poured down the kitchen sink.  Fat, oil and grease (FOG) can very easily solidify in your drain pipes and cause a nasty blockage.

Put your coffee grounds in the kitchen compost bin

While it can be tricky to get coffee grounds out of a cafetiere, it is important to put them in your kitchen compost bin rather than rinse them down the plughole.  Coffee grounds can easily stick to fat balls in the drains and increase the likelihood of a blockage.

Scrape your plates before putting them in to the dishwasher

Larger food deposits get caught at the bottom of your dishwasher but smaller food particles will get flushed away with the water.  Again this is another potential way for your drains to get blocked.

Flush drains with baking soda and white vinegar every week

Add a few tablespoons of baking soda to a cup of white vinegar and then pour the mixture down the plughole immediately.  Wait five minutes and then pour a kettle of boiling water down the plughole.

Don’t use your toilet as a wastebasket

The toilet is only for pee, poo and toilet paper.  Personal care items, baby wipes, cotton buds, dental floss and kitchen roll are just some of the things which you should not put into the toilet.  They may flush out of sight but they can get stuck in the drains (eg on kitchen fat) and lead to a blockage.

Keep your spoutings and gullies clear of leaves and moss.

This is so important in autumn when the leaves are falling from trees.  It is better to keep your spoutings and gullies clear so that leaves, moss and other garden debris don’t enter your drains.
